Why Is Steve Harrington Missing From Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 Season 2?

Steve Harrington was one of the more recognizable supporting characters brought into Stranger Things: Tales From ’85 when the animated series began. His friendship with Dustin already existed by this point in the Stranger Things timeline, giving the show an easy way to bring Hawkins’ resident babysitter into the younger group’s adventures without forcing him into every mystery. Season 1 eventually did exactly that, with Jeremy Jordan taking over the role from Joe Keery.

That makes Steve’s complete absence from Season 2 particularly noticeable. Dustin remains at the center of the Hawkins Investigators Club, Nancy Wheeler still turns up during the new investigation, and even Daniel Fischer unexpectedly returns to become central to the season’s mystery. Steve, however, never joins the H.I.C. as it investigates Bloodaxe Bill, the Lich and the Golem. The strange part is that viewers had every reason to expect him back.

Netflix Announced Steve for Season 2

Before Season 2 premiered, Netflix specifically identified Jeremy Jordan as one of the returning voice actors.

In its August 25 Season 2 preview, Netflix listed the core H.I.C. cast before naming several additional returning performers, including Brett Gipson as Hopper, Janeane Garofalo as Anna Baxter, Jeremy Jordan as Steve Harrington and Alessandra Antonelli as Nancy Wheeler. Valeria Rodriguez and Jack Griffo were also announced as returning.

It was not simply an old Season 1 cast list attached to a general franchise page. The article specifically described those actors as returning for Season 2.

The released episodes tell a different story. Current post-release Season 2 cast information from Rotten Tomatoes does not list Jordan among the credited cast, while a review published after the season became available specifically notes that Steve is MIA. Netflix has not publicly explained the discrepancy.

Steve Had a Real Role in Season 1

Steve was not merely a background cameo during the first season.

His most important involvement begins in Episode 4, “The Confession,” when Dustin pulls him into the H.I.C.’s investigation. The official episode synopsis specifically describes Dustin bringing Steve into the Hawkins Investigators Club, and Jeremy Jordan is credited as Steve for the episode.

Steve also continues into Episode 5, reinforcing the familiar Dustin-Steve dynamic that had become such an important part of the live-action series. The animated show was able to revisit their friendship during a period shortly after Stranger Things Season 2 first brought them together.

That created a reasonable expectation that Steve would remain available whenever Dustin and the others needed older backup. Season 2 instead removes him entirely from the active story.

Where Is Steve During Season 2?

Nothing has happened to Steve within the Stranger Things timeline that would explain him being unavailable.

Tales From ’85 takes place during the gap between Stranger Things Seasons 2 and 3. Steve is still living in Hawkins during this period, long before the events at Starcourt Mall bring him together with Robin Buckley. He therefore could have appeared without creating any continuity problem. Season 2 does not provide an in-universe explanation for where he is.

Steve’s existence is still acknowledged. His name is briefly referenced during the Season 2 finale, “Count to Five,” confirming that he remains part of the characters’ world even though he never physically enters the season’s story.

His absence is therefore different from a character being written out because of something that happened in the plot. Steve is simply somewhere else in Hawkins while the H.I.C. handles the latest crisis without him.

Why Was Steve Removed From Season 2?

There is currently no confirmed answer. Netflix has not said that Steve was deliberately cut, and neither Jeremy Jordan nor showrunner Eric Robles has publicly explained why a character announced as returning does not appear in the finished eight episodes. It would therefore be speculation to claim that Jordan recorded scenes that were removed or that Steve originally had a larger subplot.

What can be established is that the plans apparently changed somewhere between Netflix’s promotional announcement and the version of Season 2 that reached viewers.

The season itself is also more tightly concentrated on the H.I.C. and its new mystery. The Bloodaxe Bill investigation leads Mike, Eleven, Dustin, Lucas, Max, Will, Nikki and Charlie toward Daniel Fischer’s activities beneath Hawkins, while Nancy has a small reason to enter that particular story. Steve never receives a similar point of entry.

That may explain why the narrative functions without him, but it does not explain why Netflix announced Jordan’s return beforehand.

Could Steve Return in a Future Season?

There is no story obstacle preventing it. Steve remains alive in Hawkins, his friendship with Dustin is firmly established, and Tales From ’85 has already demonstrated that he can participate in the H.I.C.’s adventures without interfering with the events of the original series.

For now, though, Season 2 represents an unusual change from both Season 1 and Netflix’s own promotional material. Steve Harrington was publicly announced as a returning character, but the eight released episodes ultimately leave him on the sidelines.

For viewers expecting another Steve and Dustin adventure, the closest Season 2 comes is reminding them that Steve is still somewhere in Hawkins.
